REMEDIAL EDUCATION

Vanni Aid has three, interlocking priorities in northern Sri Lanka:
LIVELIHOOD, REMEDIAL EDUCATION & MEDICAL CARE

REMEDIAL EDUCATION

The disruption in education during the civil war has left the majority of middle and high school students with a very poor knowledge of English. We believe that a good command of the English language is essential for the future of these children.

Working with the Assistant Director for English from the Vavuniya Zone Education Office, we have designed a remedial program to groom students to pass the essential GCE Ordinary Level English Exam. In this, as well as all our efforts, we are enthusiastically supported by the 611 Brigade of the Sri Lankan Army.

Each class of 100 students requires two teachers. Classes are conducted two hours per day, twice a week, for one year, both after school and on weekends.

We currently need sponsors for five classes. The total cost per year for each class is $1100 (approx 12,000rs). This includes materials and the teacher’s modest salary of $2.80 per hour. Classrooms are provided by the school district.

Students are tested when they enter the program and periodically thereafter to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. Their progress has been impressive.

Please contribute generously, as the future of these children is in your hands.
